A Cook County judge on Thursday allowed R. Kelly to travel out of state for business purposes without receiving court permission.
The R&B singer and producer was charged in 2002 with 14 counts of child pornography for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with a girl. Prosecutors allege that the girl was as young as 13.
Kelly’s lawyer, Edward Genson, asked Criminal Court Judge Vincent Gaughan to allow the singer to travel to Atlanta to tape a music video between Jan. 14 and Jan. 19.
In addition to requesting permission for Kelly to travel out of state next month, Genson asked Gaughan to allow the singer to travel out of state in the future without court approval.
Genson said Kelly would notify the probation officer assigned to his case that he is traveling out of state and would contact him on a daily basis from the road. Michael Koziol, Kelly’s probation officer, testified that Kelly, who is out on bail, has complied with bail conditions.
Gaughan granted the request over the objections of Assistant State’s Atty. Shauna Boliker, saying that he has Kelly’s passport and that the singer is out on $1 million bail. Kelly also must notify prosecutors involved in the case that he is traveling, Gaughan said.
Gaughan set Feb. 7 as the next hearing for Kelly.
